Class Information

These non-credit classes are designed to accomodate the adult learner and are considerate of the adults' specific interests and needs.The instructor uses a textbook that includes themes and topics that do not address teenager-related subject matter. The classes are low-tech and are focused on face-to-face communication. Furthermore, the pace and progress of learning are adjusted to adults who work and hence have limited time available for studying; or have been away from any formal classroom learning and have to develop a learning routine.  

  • Classes are held once a week for 2 hours (120 minutes).
  • A minimum of 8 students is necessary to hold a class.
  • Payment has to be received one week before class. Full payment is required to guarantee enrollment.
  • No refunds or discounts for late enrollment, early withdrawal, or missed classes.
  • Applications are counted on a first-come-first-serve basis.

    Classes will be cancelled one week prior to the first class, August 25th, if not enough students have signed up. Please check here for student enrollment numbers.

  • Introductory German 1 (GER 1-A1)

    Course Description:
    You will be introduced to the basics of the German language, including its basic grammatical components.

    After 10 weeks you

    • can introduce and talk a little about yourself but also ask others for some of their informatio
    • can identify and say countries in German
    • can order food and drinks and understand how much you have to pay in Euro (numbers)
    • know things you need and use in everyday life
    • say the time in German
    • know about some seasonal celebrations and culinary delicatessen and specialties  in German-speaking countries

  • German 4-A1

    Date: Mondays, 09/08/ - 10/27/2008  STARTS MONDAY SEPTEMBER 8!!

    Time: 7-9pm

    Course Description:

    Prerequisites: Completion of Ger 1, 2, 3 of the A1 Beginner level or prior knowledge of some elementary grammar and vocabulary.


    This course will expand on the previously gained knowledge with focus on possessive articles in all cases, past tense and present perfect tense, sentence conjunction, time adverbs, comparatives, and demonstrative pronouns. Topics include: Introduction to Health and Fitness; Talking about professions and job descriptions; Looking for a house or apartment; Shopping for clothes.

  • German 4-A2, low advanced

    Date: Wednesdays, 09/03/ - 10/29/2008

    Time: 7:00 - 9:00pm

    Course Description:
    Prerequisite: Some functional prior knowledge or the completion of all of the above courses. A grammatical understanding of the direct and indirect object and the case, present tense, past tense, and present perfect tense and other elementary grammar aspects is necessary.  
     
    You will dive deeper into the composition of the German language and we will alternate our study in the textbook with reading Tatort DaF: Der Schützenkönig vom Chiemsee and Lausbubengeschichten by Ludwig Thoma. The class will also watch a DVD of Lausbubengeschichten.

    Date: Fridays, 09/05/ - 10/31/2008

    Time: 7-9pm

    Course Description:

    Prerequisite: A good conversational command of the German language. You should be able to express a coherent thought and be uninhibited and unafraid of talking. Mistakes are expected, explained, and gently corrected. Candid attempts of expression and creative word creations are welcome.

    This class is designed for people who seek an opportunity to maintain their current proficiency in German or  who would like to be challenged to improve on it. The focus is on discussing interesting topics of our daily life, curious occurrences around the world, or newspaper/magazine articles. Playing German games that challenge the vocabulary or the grammatical foundations of the learners are also included from time to time. 

    A textbook is not required.
