How it all began . . .
The German Language and Culture Institute is the
result of a pilot project in Spring of 2006. Noticing a
lack of opportunities for adults to learn the German
language in an alternative setting in the Anchorage
community, Dr. Carlson offered first one class a
couple of times in the Pioneer School House in
downtown Anchorage. The class began with 12
students.
Then Mrs. Debbie Brewer, a science teacher at
Lumen Christi High School, joined the learning
merriment. Mrs. Brewer graciously offered to share
her classroom and thus the adult German classes
moved from downtown Anchorage to Lumen Christi
High School on Jewel Lake Road. Mrs. Brewer has a
great science classroom with a fantastic saltwater
fish tank, a really old hermit crab, ugly stick bugs,
frogs, a hair-raising tarantula, all which offer quite the
conversational opportunities in German for the
students. The principal and the administration have
always extended a warm hospitality to my adult
students and me.
Word-of-mouth advertisement has helped to increase
the course offerings to four or five classes per week,
which led to the official opening of this business. A
few of the "original students" are still with me. Some
have taken a break for a short while and then returned.

Meet your instructor
Antje Carlson
. . . is a native German and a native speaker of the
German language. Born in Germany, she grew up in
Germany and Austria but has called Alaska home
since 1994.
She completed formal studies and research in
German instruction and learning in adulthood. She
received her Ph. D. from Union Institute & University
in Cincinnati, OH. Dr. Carlson also received
additional qualification from the German Goethe
Institut in methods and didactics of teaching
German as a foreign language. She taught German
at the University of Alaska Anchorage for several
years. She has taught German online and on
campus at Alaska Pacific University and at Wayland
Baptist University where she also taught Research
Writing. Currently Dr. Carlson teaches English
Fiction/Non-Fiction, Essentials of English, Speech
and Composition at Lumen Christi High School.
Antje is particularly fond of being a founding member
of Rilke Schule German School of Arts & Sciences
She played an integral part in the planning, start-up,
and opening of Anchorage's only K-8 public German
immersion charter school. Teaching German to
adults, however is her passion. Therefore she
continues to offer German Adult Classes in the
evening.
In her leisure time....
Dr. Carlson enjoys cooking and baking German
bread. Also, her two adopted German Shorthair
Pointers Taig and Merry keep her out of trouble by
taking her on long hikes or skijoring. The dogs are
good companions on her daily Nordic Walking on
Anchorage's rich trail system. Digital close-up
photography of plants is one of her dearest interests.
In summer you find her camping with her husband
Martin and their dogs. During those camping
excursions and while sitting at the camp fire, she
recharges her batteries by reading or thinking up
new activities for her classes.
Merry
